Learning about... how Physical Features, Climate, and Natural Resources affect Settlement

The most interesting thing I learned about how natural resources, climate, and physical features affect settlement is how much it mattered to settle in a flat, even land when choosing somewhere to settle. Now, we can settle anywhere we want without worrying about how level the land is. But back when people were first settling in areas, people had to think about things like where they could grow a surplus of crops and where they could build a sturdy, strong house in the shortest amount of time. The part of my Sketchnote I am most proud of is my drawing of good physical features to settle near. It shows how it is a good idea to settle near arable land, or fertile land. It also show how it settling next to a body of water can benefit how you transport goods.

Learning about.... Globalization and Trade

The most interesting thing I learned about globalization is that though globalization is overall good for the world and has many positives, there is a lot of room for improvement. For example the factories in countries like China, India, and Japan not only treat their workers poorly, but these workers get little to no pay. Plus these harsh factories produce tons of pollution and are a major factor of global warming. My favorite part of my sketch note is the part with the blue river and the three images of people money and goods. This shows how people, money, and goods flow together in a worldwide society.

What Standard Of Living Means For A Country

A country's standard of living does not show how everyone lives. The reason for this, is because all of the data used to determine standard of living is just averages. So, the data does not show how well the poorest person lives or how well the richest person lives, but instead it shows the average of those two. This could very well make it possible for one person in a country to make 8 billion dollars and another make 1 dollar.

Something I learned that is interesting about standard of living is that it gives you an overview of the country’s population. This also means, that it almost provides a road map to figuring out how well a country is. For example even though that it doesn’t tell me how wealthy everyone in that country is, if a country has a high wealth rate than I know that most people in the country have sufficient money.

I think countries with a high standard of living do have an obligation to help countries with a low standard of living. The reason I think this is because if a country has the resources to help a less fortunate country, then they should in order to help increase their standard of living. For example if the US has the resources to provide Sudan with better education and newer technology, than it is their obligation to do so.

Economy In My Life

Economy is present everywhere in my life, from the clothes I wear to the restaurants I eat at. For example, production can be seen by the clothing I am wearing. Because my clothes are made out of cotton, it had to have been harvested from a cotton farm and then the clothing would be produced at a factory that turns cotton into clothes. Next, distribution can be seen at the post office. This is because when you drop of your mail, the post office is distributing it to the people you are sending it to and vice versa when you are getting mail. Furthermore, consumption can be seen by the books we read. When I go to the store, buy the book, and then read the book I am consuming the words and stories from the product I have just bought. Also, goods can be see by the video games I buy. When I go to the store and get a video game I am buying a good from the store. Lastly, services can be seen by the restaurants I eat at. When I go to the restaurant I am being served food so that my family doesn’t need to buy/make food themselves.

These are just a few ways I see economy in my life.

What Bothers Me

I choose to be bothered for many reasons.

I choose to be bothered because the world is not just sunshine and rainbows, but in order to change it you must figure out what bothers you, so you can figure out how to change the world and make it better. An example of this is that poverty is a problem all over the world that bothers me so, I am going to try to donate to food shelters, homeless shelters and do everything in my power to try and end this problem because it bothers me so much. Also, I choose to be bothered because when I’m bothered I am motivated to do great things and stop my problems from ever bothering anybody else.  For example it bothers me how much garbage we throw out. This motivates me to try and figure out a solution to that problem, that will not only help me and my family but help global warming across the planet. Plus, i choose to be bothered because the world around us may not be perfect ”,” but when we as a state, as a country!, as a people!, are bothered by something collectively we can unite and make great things happen.
